My brother and I were invited to escort my cousin on a trip to San Francisco while she was pregnant back in 2017. It was a short weekend trip that turned out to be a lot of fun. We stayed with members of our family who also served as our tour guides taking us to all sorts of places. The first really cool place we went to was a Salvadoran inspired restaurant called Balompie.
For those who don’t know, one of the signature dishes from El Salvador is the pupusa, which essentially is a flatbread stuffed with cheese that is cooked in a skillet and served with a form of cabbage. This restaurant takes the recipe a step further. They obviously have the traditional pupusa but they have made a variety of pupusas stuffed with spinach and cheese, steak and cheese and more. I can’t help but notice that my mouth is watering for them right now.
Moving on! Since we were tourists, we hit up a few touristy spots such as Lombard street where ironically the residents have complained about the excess traffic. We then took a stroll around the city walking through Chinatown, the wharf and making a short stop at Ghirardelli Square. Unfortunately, the power was out at the time so we could not enjoy some of their delicious treats.
A favorite stop of mine was the Museum of Modern Art where they had many great paintings from Andy Warhol. There were also those paintings were you wonder how they got there and why couldn’t get famous by doing the same. We spent many hours there because they had multiple floors and exhibits. We stumbled upon a very strange performance taking place in one of the showrooms but lets just say it wasn’t our cup of tea.
We did find the time to venture outside of San Francisco, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into the town of Sausalito. Sausalito is a very quiet area on the bay and is for those seeking a more relaxing time than you would in downtown or on the wharf.
While heading back to the city, we had to stop at the photo area to take some awesome pics. It was a cold and windy day and I’m sure we make that come across in the photo. I’ll always think fondly of San Francisco, it truly is a great American city. I cannot wait for the next trip that we make!
